Mexico's Beaches

Sun-Kissed Sanctuaries

With thousands of miles of coastline, Mexico has plenty to offer and something for everyone! From warm, sparkling waters gently lapping at your toes to the roar of the pounding surf as the sea reclaims an ancient volcano, from shear cliffs to swaying palms, from the Mexican Riviera to the Western Caribbean, there's an unforgettable oceanside experience awaiting you in Mexico.

Puerto Vallarta is nestled on the Bahía de Banderas, surrounded by the majestic Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains. The city offers 25 miles of golden beaches on the Mexican Pacific and is characterized by its impressive colonial and modern buildings, shopping malls and golf courses.

The beaches at Puerto Vallarta are breathtaking, each with its unique charm. The best beach for water sports, such as sailing, fishing and jet skiing, is Bahía de Banderas. Quimixto, Punta Mita and Los Arcos are ideal for diving. Boat rides around the bay offer the chance to observe dolphins, turtles and humpback whales.

The historic downtown area of Puerto Vallarta is quaint and walk-friendly, with cobblestone streets, white-walled houses, wrought-iron balconies and red-tiled roofs, complemented by impressive colonial structures like the Templo de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe and original murals by the artist Manuel Lepe. The Museum of Archaeology is also worth a visit for its display of pre-Colombian artifacts from the nearby dig site.

Puerto Vallarta's restaurants offer a wide array of delightful seafood dishes, as well as a broad range of international cuisine. Sidewalk cafés and coffee houses also abound, often featuring live music.

Cancún is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Mexico. Its superb Caribbean location makes it the perfect place for everything from ecotourism, snorkeling, horseback riding and fishing to golf, scuba diving, surfing and sailing. Extreme sports are a major part of the excitement in Cancún — the city boasts one of the highest bungee jumps in Mexico, the Regio.

When it comes to archaeological sites and the history of the Mayan culture, Cancún has it all. Attractions include Mayan ruins both in Quintana Roo and the neighboring state of Yucatan, home to the Mayan pyramids of Chichen-Itza. The Cancún Museum displays pieces from several Mayan archaeological sites. El Rey and El Meco also showcase dramatic ruins of the Mayan culture, as does San Gervasio on Cozumel Island, a short trip away from Cancún.

Within driving distance of the city, travelers can find several natural reserves, such as the Riviera Maya eco-archaeological sites of Xcaret and Xel-ha, which offer breathtaking cenotes, clearwater lagoons, river rapids and forest walks.

When the Caribbean sun goes down, the intense Cancún nightlife begins and continues well past dawn. Its nightclubs and discothéques offer all kinds of music, as well as some of the finest Mexican and imported drinks. Those looking for a celebration on the water can head to party cruises that provide dinner, drinks and music while you sail along the bay and Laguna Nichupte.

Nuevo Vallarta is one of the up-and-coming tourist destinations on the Mexican Pacific. Its modern marina, gourmet restaurants, luxury condominiums and upscale residential zones are only a few of the reasons travelers are drawn to this eye-catching city. Its natural beauty and secluded feel make it an ideal getaway.

The beautiful beaches in Nuevo Vallarta feature spectacular sunset views and world-class water sports facilities. Some of the most visited beaches are located in the northern part of Bahía de Banderas, including Bucerías, Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Corral del Risco and Punta Mita, all close to Nuevo Vallarta. Other sites to visit are the Rincón de Guayabitos, Bucerías and Penita de Jaltemba.

Nuevo Vallarta also offers a variety of seafood restaurants with regional dishes, and the city boasts a wide selection of quiet bars, nightclubs with live music and modern discothéques. Nuevo Vallarta is perfect for travelers in search of a lavish tourist destination with first-class facilities.

Only an hour south of the Arizona/Mexico border is the fishing village of Puerto Peñasco, or Rocky Point. Puerto Peñasco offers visitors some of Sonora's best beaches, with warm and clear waters excellent for swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving. You can also take part in many of the fishing excursions or enjoy a sunset yacht cruise. This location provides a perfect combination of natural beauty and top-quality tourism attractions.

Nearby, explore vast natural areas like the Piñacate Biosphere Reserve and the Gran Desierto de Altar, where research on indigenous animals is conducted and where visitors can enjoy outdoor recreational activities like sandboarding and mountain climbing. An abundance of aquatic activities is also available near Puerto Peñasco, including scuba diving and fishing. Be sure to visit Isla San Jorge, where you'll encounter a wide array of marine species, such as sea lions, dolphins and harbor porpoises.

When you return to the port, you can sit down to a delicious fish or seafood dinner. To finish out the night, hit a bar or nightclub to enjoy good times in a friendly environment.
