Sprawled over the verdant farmlands of KwaZulu Natal’s beautiful Midlands area, this is the perfect place for the family to enjoy an outdoor getaway totally removed from busy city life. As the magnificent Drakensberg Mountains aren’t far away, this is a place of rolling hills.
Set high on one of these, the magnificent views over the grassy farm meadows, fish-filled dams and inviting streams change as the seasons do. But one thing always stays the same – the friendliness of your welcome and the quality of your stay.

If you didn’t want to leave the resort, you wouldn’t have to. There’s a small suprette for essentials and a plethora of onsite activities. No surprise to find out there’s quality trout fishing and a lovely equestrian centre from which to go horse riding. However, there’s also canoeing, two tennis courts, nine holes of par 3 golf, bowls, snooker, volleyball, badminton, quad bikes and a number of lovely walks. If that doesn’t tire you out, there’s also an indoor gym.
If the children get bored with any of those, there’s a games room, putt putt, an excellent jungle gym and an animal farm. To top it off, there’s an extensive daily entertainment program that includes a sponsored tractor / trailer ride.
If relaxing is more your style, there’s a huge swimming pool that comes complete with the friendly, smiling faces of your poolside service people. And, in winter, there’s always a lovely roaring fire.
Although every chalet has a fully-equipped kitchen, you can choose to have lunch and dinner in the restaurant every night. Saturdays are extra special, thanks to a traditional boma braai, along with great entertainment from the resident Zulu dancers.
To top it off, Midlands Saddle and Trout has a world-class Italian inspired Spa with well-appointed treatment rooms, as well as outdoor poolside treatments. Choose between full body hot-stone massages, cellulite treatments, manicures, pedicures, waxing, Swiss body wraps and many more. If you’d like to enjoy a couple’s special package, the resort’s babysitting service will make that more than just a dream.
Each well-maintained stand-alone chalet is fully-equipped with all the things you expect - like a washing machine, full kitchen, TV, hi-fi and microwave – and some that you don’t – like your own fireplace. The spacious units are also serviced daily, which should make your stay even more relaxing.
Midlands Saddle and Trout is just 13 kilometres away from Mooi River, where you can find all the facilities you’d expect from a thriving town - supermarkets, specialty shops and medical facilities. You may pass some stud farms, of which there are many in this rich, rolling farmland, including multi-award-winning Summerhill.
Considering this is South Africa, there’s a game park about 40 kilometres away, where you’ll find the usual great views of zebra and other buck. You might also spot a rhino and other more exciting stuff, too.
This area also forms a key part of the renowned Midlands Meander and, as such, you’ll come across many artists, potters and weavers. You can bicycle around the Nottingham Road section, which is where this resort is situated, if you’re feeling really energetic. Car or bike, it’s an excellent way to find perfect gifts to take home, though you may not want to part with them upon your return.
