Known as the Jacaranda City for all the purple blossom-bedecked trees which line its thoroughfares nearby Pretoria is a lovely, quiet city. Its long and fascinating history make it worth exploration. Here you will find many significant old buildings and some fascinating museums. The Transvaal Museum has wonderful natural history displays and also worth visiting are the Cultural History Museum and the Smuts Museum, just outside town.
Nearby is the Premier Game Reserve, next door to the Cullinan Diamond Mine, where the largest diamond in the world was found. Natural history is on display at the Tswaing Meteorite Crater, where a giant meteorite slammed into the ground many centuries ago. Pretoria's arcades are a delight for shoppers, very often with pavement cafes they are a great ‘people-watching’ opportunity.The Oeverwacht Artists Colony is well worth a visit.
You can picnic in the Fountains Valley Nature Reserve at the source of the Apies River, in the Wonderboom Nature Reserve with its 1000 year old fig tree, or in Magnolia Dell, fragrant with the scent of Magnolias in spring and with it delightful statues of Peter Pan and Wendy gazing at each other across a small dam.
Take a tour to the Cradle of Humankind, at Sterkfontein, Gauteng’s famous World Heritage Site - where caves have produced nearly half of the world’s hominid fossil discoveries. Close to the Cradle is the Kromdraai Wonder Cave, as well as the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve.
